Haworth-Village 2004 Review

The Haworth village website was launched on 1st January 2004 with approximately 800 pages, since then we have continued to update the website and add new content and features and the website now has over 2500 pages.

Visitor numbers have grown steadily, going from zero to more than 900 unique visitors per day and now delivering more than 2 million pages a year.

We would like to thank the people who have contributed, whether it be a restaurant review, a post on the forum, an ad, event or your local group webpage.

Highlights of the year

The Haworth floodThe Haworth flood

On 10 August Station rd and Mill Hey were hit by serious flooding (more about the flood...). A few weeks later we were sent this picture which appeared on an American website with the title Haworth Carnival 2004. The way others imagined it!

What people have said

From forums to e-mails people have voiced their views...

Hello:
I must tell you how much I have enjoyed exploring your wonderful website this afternoon. It is so informative and interesting, and I feel as though I have actually spent the afternoon visiting your beautiful town because of the wonderful pictures. I love the information about the schools because I am a teacher and it is interesting to get a glimpse of what the schools were like so long ago. The Bronte sisters have always been two of my favorite authors and it was fascinating to see some of the places where they lived.
Thank you for a lovely, interesting visit. I hope someday I can visit there in person.

Hello :

We were just in Haworth, visiting from America, and watched the Punch and Judy show.  We and our children enjoyed it very much.   Can you tell me the name of the man who performed the show?  I want to include it in our album.

We are still talking about how funny the show was.   This sort of humor isn't "PC" in America, as you probably know, so it was especially nice to see people just have fun and laugh at something without pretending that there is some giant meta-message attached.

All the best,

Donna Mooney

Haworth Fly hits it big in the USA!Haworth Fly hits it big in the USA!

I live in Washington State. Every year we have a Procession of the Species in late April.

This year the State House of Representative staffers decided they want to be "House Flies." I have been searching the web for a decent picture of a house fly's "face" so I can make a headdress. The absolute best housefly picture I found is on your website.

After browsing through the rest of your site, I have NO idea why you have this picture, but I sure am happy you do.

Thanks for the great reference help.

Seen on a WW2 Re-enactment forum shortly after the May 2004 1940's weekend

Never fails to amaze me. You take two Halftrack's a Dodge Command car a Dodge Weapons Carrier and a Jeep towing a 37mm and not forgetting twenty guys fully kitted up in full Ranger kit, and what do they take photo's of. A fat German policeman and a stupid looking F***ING CLOWN.

Thanks a lot you T***'s!

1040 weekend 2004How did they miss this link on the front page? Haworth 1940's weekend - 2004, Vehicles here...

Picture left is a shot of the vehicles on Main St, the one on the left has been "aged" sepia toned and as much modern clutter has been removed as practicable - yellow lines, window style made as sash, street/ for sale signs and marquee removed. About the 1940 weekend more...

Time-lapse video has proved to be very popular (more about timelapses...) we will continue to add more as they are made.

Picture left is a timelapse of the Eiffel Tower at dusk here... file is 230kb.

Your Comments:

We attended the recent Arts festival and were impressed with both the stamina of the artists given the appalling weather conditions and the quality of performers and art exhibited. Our hats go off to both John Cooper Clerk for his whacky blend of humour, (although we did take some offence at his 'Jewish jokes'- no one should be a target in these uncertain times...) We also found some photos from a group calling themselves 'Artspotters'... A pleasant addition to our day. The photos were fantastic and we only wish we could have found more of the limited edition. Our thanks to Gill and Andy. we will be visiting their website at: http://www.hotplatearts.co.uk/artspotters.html
as soon as we finish our tour of the north of your lovely country.

I am increasingly concerned about the level of anti-social behaviour in Haworth. During last weeks fantastic Steam Gala we were appalled to see obscene words carved across the Bowling Green in Haworth Central Park and an enormous lump of stone from the footbridge pushed over near the line. It also shocks me to hear the Spar Manager telling staff to serve 18 year olds with alcohol despite Spar having a national policy to serve people over 21. The young people buying the cider then consumed it across the road on the steps of the station.

What a wonderfully snowy morning, (and more on the way apparently), tis' fresh and exhilarating up on t'moors today.
It's a shame the comments board is tucked away and tricky to find, could do with a link to it on the home page. It would be nice to see some more comments from visitors to the site. time for a hot chocolate in a cosy tearoom after all that fresh air me thinks.

I agree with the above comments that a Forum can really add to a web site.Maybe one could be reintroduced with an adequate disclaimer to cover the good people who have created this excellent site.It is a great pity that a few can spoil it for the rest.Cheers.

EDIT
oooppsss----- sorry,I forgot to sign my message--- not trying to hide.Regards Bill Walsh(Auckland NZ) ps John--I can probably help you with some info on Far Barcroft, since I spent my first few years of life there.

It's great to see that comments and views can be aired on the website again. I am curious as to why the Forum was shut down as it was a useful tool for sharing information and opinions, surely complaints about messages could have been dealt with on the forum instead of completely shutting it down? (puzzled)

It's a wonderful website and we always enjoy browsing. The photos are some of the best we've ever seen. Stunning! Thank you !

It is a great shame that you felt the need to remove the Discussion forums from the Haworth Village web site. I understand this was because of complaints about some of the messages. It is a shame that one or two people can cause removal of such an interesting and useful resource, but feel that the forums should still exist, despite the risks. If anyone else feels the same, please post your messages of support here.

I was about to reply to some messages in the forum about the Merralls and Far Barcroft. If anyone reads this and wants to re-send me the messages for a reply, please do so at jom_6@yahoo.co.uk

Regards,

John (jom_6)
