Thomas the Tank Engine was created by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry. He wrote the stories for his young son Christopher and was encouraged to submit his work for publication.

In 1945 his first book "The Three Railway Engines" was published. The following year Thomas appeared in the book "Thomas the Tank Engine". He continued to produce a book every year, the last "Tramway Engines" was published in 1972, making a total of twenty six books.

The Reverend Awdry died in 1997 aged 85.
