Haworth History – West Lane Baptist Church
In 2002 West Lane Baptist Church celebrated 250 years, 1752 – 2002.
THIS CHAPEL
Was Erected by voluntary Contribution
And vested in Trustees for the USE of
The Baptist interest. A.D. 1752 And Enlarged
in the year 1775 by the same means under
The Auspice of the ever Memorable the late
Rev. James Hartley; who through the
Divine blessing raised an interest here:
And preached the gospel in this place
27 years
Israel Sutcliffe, late of Harewood hill,
Gave a sum of Money to Mr John Green-
wood of Bridge-house to Erect Galleries
in this Chapel which with the Concurrence
and Approbation of the said Trustees was
laid out for that Purpose in the Year, 1786.

BORN 13TH APRIL 1800, DIED 29TH OCTOBER 1893,
WHO MAINTAINED WORTHILY THE OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT
WHO MAINTAINED WORTHILY THE OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT
IN THE SUNDAY SCHOOL; AND FOR OVER 50 YEARS THAT OF DEACON
IN THE CHURCH; BEING LOVED AND REVERED BY ALL WHO KNEW
HIM FOR HIS CHRISTIAN LIBERALITY, GENTLE DISPOSITION,
AND CHRIST LIKE DEPORTMENT.
Also of SARAH GREENWOOD, HIS SISTER,
BORN 10TH SEPTEMBER 1811, DIED 22ND MARCH 1893,
WHO FOR MANY YEARS WAS A DEVOTED TEACHER IN THE SUNDAY
SCHOOL, AND WORKER IN THE CHURCH, ENDEARING HERSELF TO ALL
BY HER UNOBTRUSIVE ACTS OF LOVE AND MERCY.
In death they are not divided
TO THE GLORY OF GOD

IN LOVING MEMORY
OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY
IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914-1918.
