The Yorkshire Air Ambulance launched on October 25th 2000
was the first to operate in Yorkshire. It has flown over
3000 life saving missions.
The West Yorkshire Metropolitan Ambulance Service (WYMAS)
NHS Trust operate the service on behalf of the Yorkshire
Air Ambulance Service Charity. Their aims are to offer
a service to rural and urban communities across all of
Yorkshire.
The
Air Ambulance can be made airborne in as little as two
minutes, and is capable of traveling at a speed of over
140mph. Video
clip of the Air Ambulance taking off here...
(clip is 390kb and will take 1 - 3min on a 56k modem,
you will need flash).
Due to Civil Aviation Authority rules the helicopter is
operational 7 days a week 365 days a year during daylight
hours - 8:00am - 6:00pm. The Air Ambulance Team and helicopter
are based at Leeds Bradford Airport. Take
a 360 degree view of the helicopter at the airport here...
The
Helicopter is a EuroCopter Bolkow 105 which is adapted
specifically as an air ambulance. It is designed to carry
a pilot, two operational paramedics, equipment and can
carry one patient. In extreme cases it can take a second
patient. It can deliver a fast inter-hospital transfer
of seriously ill or injured patients and a high level
of patient comfort, especially to patients with relevant
head, neck, back and spinal injuries.
The
Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service Charity funds the service
which annually costs in the region of £1 million.
Locally, there are organisations that help support the
Air Ambulance. Haworth Primary School Gardening Club did
a sponsored graveyard tidy which raised £650 more...
and the 2005 calendar raised £1,055 more...
Annually
at Christmas time there is the Bronte Vintage Tractor
Road Run which has raised thousands more...
The Yorkshire Air Ambulance needs help to continue to
provide the service. There are many ways you can get involved:
