Haworth Central Park

History of Haworth Central Park

The map shows how the site looked in 1852. On 17th November 1926 Emott Rawdon Estate sold the land for the park to Haworth Urban District Council, on the 26 January 1929 Haworth park was completed; “Site an excellent one but laying out has proved difficult due to steepness. Cost £11,000 so bowling green deferred until later”. On the 12th May 1937 A tablet was erected at Haworth Central Park to Commemorate the opening of the Bowling Green and Pavilion on the Coronation day of their Majesties King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth.

In the 1970’s, Haworth still had a bandstand in its Central Park, which was used for concerts, children’s events and other live entertainment’s. The date that it disappeared is as yet unclear, but it was declared unsafe by the then local Parks Committee and at their request, Keighley Council removed the whole superstructure, leaving just the base. Picture right is how the Bandstand looked in the 1930’s.

The Park today

On the 21st July 2006, Haworth Central Park was awarded a coveted Green Flag. Green Flag is the national award for parks and green spaces in England and Wales and is a means of recognising the park as a high quality green space.

Central Park was visited on June 8th by independent judges on behalf of Green Flag award scheme. Haworth Central Park applied for the Green Flag award as part of the park forward plan, developed in partnership between Bradford Parks and Landscapes Department and the Friends of Haworth Park, a local group, open to all residents who wish to see Central Park go from strength to strength.

There is a Friends of Haworth Park group who are working to improve the park, one of their aims is to restore the old bandstand. If you would like to know more about the work they do and how to get involved see link below.

In February 2011 work started (see photo right) to remove the old base and to replace with new, the Bandstand will be “bolted” on to the new base when funds allow. Official opening of the Bandstand base in September 2011 here…
