1- Spider shedding skin

1- Spider shedding skin - August - Haworth

1- Spider shedding skin

Pictures are of a Garden Spider shedding or moulting its external "skin"

Spiders have no inner skeleton, in order to grow they must shed their rigid external skin. During the moulting process the spider is in great danger from predators, as the soft body means it cannot move.

For this reason they tend to moult at night out of sight of danger. Once the spider has removed itself from the old skin it has to lie and wait for the new one to harden.
