In storm clouds strong air currents move frozen water droplets up and down. Every time they rise and fall, the frozen droplets collect more water and ice crystals. These frozen layers build up until they get too heavy and fall to ground as hailstones.
You can see the size of the hailstones in comparison with the penny, which is slightly bigger than a dime, the largest is about 7mm across which is about the size you get in the UK. These are tiny compared to other countries such as China India and USA where hailstones the size of tennis balls can happen.
