Dragonfly Emperor - female

Dragonfly Emperor - female - July - Haworth

Dragonfly Emperor - female

Picture is of a female Emperor Dragonfly Anax imperator who is oviposting (laying eggs in the water).

The Emperor has the largest wingspan of all the dragonflies in Britain. In the first picture you can see how much smaller Damselflies are, in this case a Common Blue is having a go at the dragonfly which is preoccupied with laying her eggs, normally the damselfly would be prey.

Length: 78mm
Wingspan: 10.5cm

Photo taken 7th July 2006
