Slickensides

Slickensides - May - Dimples Quarry

Slickensides

The rock face on the north side of Dimples Quarry has a number of the polished, smooth patches seen in this picture. This is because it is one side of a fault in the rock.

As the rock faces on either side of the fault moved past each other the pressure and temperature were great enough to partially melt the sand grains and leave these very smooth surfaces. The scratches on the slickensides show that the movement of the fault was more lateral than vertical.
