Ganister

Ganister - March - Ponden Clough

Ganister

Another rock derived from the coal measure soils is ganister. Unlike the seat earth clays this is a very hard, pure, white sandstone. It too finds applications in the manufacture of refractory materials. This sample is from underneath a thin coal seam in Ponden Clough. The fine black lines in the ganister are the remains of rootlets of the plants which formed the overlying coal.
