Ripples

Ripples - March - Penistone Hill

Ripples

The sandstones of the Millstone Grit were laid down in a huge delta (rather like the Mississippi Delta today) which once covered a large part of what is now northern England. Sometimes the ripples in the sand of an ancient beach were covered rapidly enough to be preserved in the rock.

Top photo: You are nearer to seeing a fossil than you might think. Here are some 320 million year old ripples which can be found just off Haworth Main Street. If you go up the steps leading to the Church, as you pass through the pillars, they are situated on your right.

Lower photo: The ripples are in one of the car parks on Penistone Hill.
