Alcomden Stones

The Alcomden stones are a fine example of a millstone grit scarp edge tor. The exact way in which these features were formed is uncertain but deep freezing and later thawing in the last ice age were probably of critical importance.

These pictures clearly show the remarkable weathering of some of the stones - deep potholes on surfaces which are now nearly vertical. Again the mechanisms are unclear.
