Haworth 'A strange uncivilized place' by local Historian Steve Wood is now out.
The book's sub-title is taken from a letter which Charlotte Bronte wrote to her publisher in 1849. A member of the publishing company was due to call at Haworth to collect her manuscript and Charlotte wrote: 'He will find Haworth a strange uncivilized little place such as - I dare say - he never saw before.'
The book traces the history of the village, looking at its former farming, textile and stone quarrying industries, its houses, shops and inns, churches, reservoirs and gasworks, and explores some of the popular beliefs of the nineteenth century - including a cure for cattle afflicted by a witch's curse - and some well-known aspects of the Brontes connections with Haworth.
