Local Gardener in the Stocks!

Steve Thorpe who runs the Haworth Primary School Gardening club, braved the cold weather and sat in the stocks to raise money for the Sudan appeal. The Gardening club is raising money to set up and develop a growing area for a new school called the “Bread of Life Centre” near Port Sudan. Steve let children, parents and teachers throw wet sponges and custard pies at him which raised £163:03. The Gardening club would like to thank Morrisons for providing sponges and shaving foam, and thank people who donated the tombola prizes.

There is another chance to throw a sponge at Steve this Thursday 9th March 3:30pm at Haworth Primary School, 3 sponges for 50p and custard pie for £1.

Haworth Primary School Gardening club is forming links with the school in Sudan, which was built with £5250 raised by Calverley & Haworth Parish churches. The money paid for three classrooms, a kitchen and the wage for Rev. Matua for six months.

The Gardening club children are going to help and encourage the children in Sudan set up and develop growing areas at their school, and are hoping to forge links via email to find out how gardening in Sudan is like.

The Gardening club wants to raise £300. Ed Savage, chairman of the Northern Sudan Group is planning to take the money raised to Port Sudan on 14th March to buy materials to make the growing areas, soil to fill them and water barrels to store the valuable water when it rains.

Update: 9th March 2006
Thursday raised £129:98 and the final total including the non-uniform day was £436:30!
